You know, I just watched that Coleman piece this morning, after writing the blog post last night. I have a knee-jerk opposition to Bennington left over from when they "restructured" and decided that English should be taught by writers and not critics--obviously, I think critics have something of great value to offer. But I do think Coleman's on to something--we need to expand our definition of research, and emphasize practice along with (not to the exclusion of) theory, in our work. I think there's room for all of us, but we're in a sort of bizarre transition time right now.
Agreed re the bizarre transition time, plus economic issues are going to have their say in how we do restructure/revisit the idea of the university.I don't think we have really measured or analyzed what we learn from university education. Maybe I'll write a post about what I learned from university (that'll take a while to think through, though).
